Weekly Journal 178 - Omnivore

Omnivore

This week Omnivore announced that they are shutting down their read it later service at the end of November. (Originally they announced it would shut down on November 15th, but a few days later the deadline was extended to the end of the month) Apparently the team behind Omnivore has been acquihired by a company called ElevenLabs, and as a part of the acquisition they are closing down Omnivore. Omnivore is an open source application and the code will remain available to the community.

For me, this was an unwelcome surprise and I’ve been scrambling to find a replacement so that I can my data migrated well ahead of the deadline. While Omnivore is open source, it’s a fairly complex application to self host, and I’m not really in a position where I can do that securely without incurring considerable hosting costs. I’ve been looking at alternatives, I think I’ve found a good replacement in ReadWise. ReadWise is neither open source nor free to use, but so far it looks like it has the most compelling set of features. I’m primarily interested in using a tool like this to manage my backlog of articles and documents, to create highlights and notes, and to integrate that data into my notes app. ReadWise, and the beta ReadWise Reader, are doing a pretty nice job so far. As an added bonus, ReadWise Reader can also act as an RSS feed reader and receive email newsletters. This will help save some time and remove friction from my reading and note taking process. The only thing it can’t do out of the box is integrate notes directly with zk. However, it does support exporting to Markdown files, and then I can write a script to incorporate those files into zk.
