A quick thought about AI. Since November 2025, generative AI models have become a viable option for writing code. Combined with the newer agent harnesses that can run a development loop largely unattended, technical managers and directors suddenly have the opportunity to make tangible technical contributions while still performing their management work. I’m still figuring out how best to use these tools, but this past week I’ve opened up two pull requests based on work I did with AI assistance.
I still wouldn’t assign myself anything that is in critical path for delivery, but I’m looking forward to making more code contributions in the future. It’s like new life has been injected into my job.
