Dart
First Impressions
Dart is an object-oriented scripting language that optionally compiles into a single, native executable for distribution. It also can compile to Javascript or WASM for web-based delivery. Dart has a strong core library, and strong tooling with built-in profiler, debugger, and logging. If has syntax that would be familiar to anybody with experience in Java, Javascript, C#, and similar languages. It doesn’t have the strong community of Python, but the packages they do have seem to be well-built. The CLI tutorial was a great introduction to the language, and a demonstration of using Dart to build small tools.
What I Like
- Compiles to single executable for easy distribution
- Strong core library
- Debugger, profiler, logging included
- Single, unified CLI tool for managing projects and external packages
- Strong typing makes it useful for larger projects
What I Don’t Like
- The language is a bit more complicated than Python
- The library ecosystem isn’t nearly as robust as Python
- Less popularity means less community support
