Weekly Journal 79 - Social Media

It’s been almost three months since I decided to ditch social media. I am happy to report that I am, well, happier as result. For the most part I am blissfully unaware of what is happening on Mastodon, Twitter, etc. and I find that I don’t miss it at all. Instead of worrying about the current outrage du jour I have more energy to spend on things that matter.

This article about how the Fediverse can be pretty toxic by Drew DeVault popped up into my RSS feed reader this morning, and I have to say if nothing else it cements in my mind that I made the right choice. The major points Drew made about how Mastodon and other Fediverse systems encourage terrible behavior mirror my own experience, and were the primary driver for my decision to bail out.

At this point, if you find that social media is causing similar problems in your life, I would encourage you to quit. I think you’ll find it to a refreshing change.
